Innovators of the Modern Piano

Few family business legacies are as rich and remarkable as that of Steinway & Sons. Founded by German immigrant Henry Engelhard Steinway in 1853, the company set a standard for hand craftsmanship, technical innovation and performance that has never been equaled.

Henry's son, William E. Steinway, was one of the great visionaries of his era, and revolutionized the company's business and marketing techniques. He cultivated relationships between Steinway and celebrated pianists including Anton Rubinstein and Ignace Jan Paderewski, and built the original Steinway Hall, which became the cultural and musical center of New York. By the time William's son Theodore became President, the Steinway name was familiar to all. Theodore worked tirelessly to preserve the Steinway piano's distinctive quality and the family's renowned reputation. Under his steady leadership, the company survived both the Great Depression and World War II. Through it all, the incomparable Steinway sound endured.
